Miriam has always had an interest in international law. Before commencing her studies at Cambridge University, Miriam worked as a law clerk within the Office of the Prosecutor, Appeals section at the International Criminal Court. As a result of this fascinating practical experience, she decided to concentrate her studies in international law and pursue legal research in Cambridge in the field of international criminal law. She wrote her LLM thesis under the supervision of Dr. O'Keefe on the subject of victims' participation rights within the International Criminal Court. Miriam graduated from Downing College in June 2007, specialising in international law. Upon completing her Masters at Cambridge University, Ms. Cohen will pursue further studies in international law and human rights law at Harvard University.

Studying at the University of Cambridge was a dream which was made possible by the Right Honourable Paul Martin Sr. scholarship.

Cambridge is a lovely city, a perfect place to spend a marvellous academic year and ideal to meet the most brilliant minds. The old colleges and churches combined with the open green spaces make Cambridge one of the most stunning places I have ever been. May it be during the winter, where the light snow makes one feel like they live in another century or the spring when the Cambridge bumps are happening, Cambridge never ceased to amaze me.

The academic life in Cambridge is astounding. Not only one has the opportunity to learn from the pre-eminent Professors in their respective fields, but also from the finest guest speakers, ranging from Justice Rosalyn Higgins to amnesty international lectures. The Squire Law Library with its impressive array of books and the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law make the learning experience both enjoyable and extraordinarily rewarding.

My experience at Cambridge, both academically and personally, will always remain one of my most cherished memories. This extraordinary chapter of my life would not have been possible if it weren't for the award of the Right Honourable Paul Martin Sr. scholarship. I am sincerely honoured to have been selected to receive this prestigious award and I will always remain extremely grateful for being chosen by the Canadian Institute for Advanced Legal Studies and for their continuous support during my programme at Cambridge.
